This website lists the biggest and most iconic celebrities of the 60s. Along with descriptions, there are video links to see the celebrity in action. Some of the celebrities include: The Beatles, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Raquel Welch, Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, Elizabeth Taylor, and Elvis Presley.

This article describes the current state of our celebrity-obsessed culture. There are helpful and harmful celebrities. There are celebrities that help us to lead better human lives, and there are celebrities that lead us to debase our tastes and ourselves. But whether good or bad, no celebrity should become an idol for us.

Goals

-To work with Dr. Allison to determine the necessary research methods to facilitate exploration of my proposed focus.
-To determine whether social changes in the 1960s had a negative or positive impact on different aspects of entertainment in the media today.
-To gain a better understanding of the current public view on how entertainment is evolving for the individual.
-To compare political influences in mass media through both decades domestically and potentially globally.
-To investigate how the content of reality television and internet entertainment are changing social perceptions of sex, violence, and celebrity.
-To use my findings and the insight of Dr. Allison to complete a 10-20 page research paper.
-To complete a review of the appropriate literature.

To Accomplish These Goals I Will:

Complete assigned readings, including:

- Mediated, by Thomas de Zengotita
- Excerpts from Media and Society in the Digital Age, by Kevin Kawamoto
- Excerpts from Communication Technology and Social Change; Theory and Implications, by Carolyn A. Lin & David J. Atkin
- Scholarly journals
- Surveys and outlets of public opinion regarding social change and entertainment in the 1960s and 2000s
- Newspaper /periodical/ media coverage of entertainment in the 1960s and 2000s.

To use my findings and the insight of Dr. Allison to complete a 10-20 page research paper.

Grading Based Upon:
-Bi-weekly meetings and supplementary email contact with Dr. Allison. (On-going 15%)
-Journal entries of research done, thoughts on readings, etc. (to be handed to Dr. Allison before bi weekly meetings)
(On-going, Complete Log to be handed December 15th 20%)
-An in-depth and cumulative annotated bibliography (November 24th 30%)
-A final 11-15 page research paper (to be focused on a specific area within research)
(Proposal by October 20th, Final due December 15th 35%)

This ambitious project is designed to precede a Departmental Honors thesis to be written in the Spring of 2009. Key to that thesis will be the annotated bibliography. The paper will focus on one smaller area. Christina will propose the paper topic no later than October 20.
